Campanhã is a district west of the center of Porto, which recently experienced rapid increase in population and importance, in relation to the rest of the city. The planning of a new cultural center in the area is responding to this newly accrued relevance. The cine center should offer a variety of functions, including a multifunctional space for all kinds of cultural events, as well as an auditorium and a range of offices.
My proposal sorts the functions into two buildings, which are connected on the ground level. The sizing and placement of the new added volumes is a result of an analysis of the surrounding urban situation. Its aim is to integrate into the urban context, while simultaneously exceling itself as a public building, generating relevant spaces in the city. The two buildings slightly jump back from the alignment of the street, forming a public square towards the city. The simple structure, composed of supports and slaps, provides flexible space to all functions. In the ground floor, where the two parts are connected, the facade opens itself up completely, allowing the inside space to flow in the attached garden in the back. Above, the expanded metal facade shades the rooms and protects them from the intense Portuguese sun.
